Porsche 356

The Porsche 356 marked the beginning of a new era in carmaking history as the first-ever Porsche production automobile. It debuted after a series of now-iconic vehicles from the Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH, including the Volkswagen Beetle, the Cisitalia Grand Prix race car, and the Auto Union Grand Prix cars. In 1950, two years after the debut of the 356, the Austrian company would go on to become part of the German group Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH.

Upon its release in 1948, the Porsche 356 was a nimble, lightweight vehicle with a rear-engine and rear-wheel drive, available as both a two-door hardtop coupe and a two-door open rooftop car. Created by Ferdinand Porsche II, commonly known as Ferry and son of the company founder, it followed in on the footsteps of his father’s Volkswagen Beetle by featuring a similar body construction. However, the body and the chassis were an entirely new design.

In June 1948, the first Porsche 356 was road-certified and entered in a race at Innsbruck. The new model won in its class, which led to the model being refined and re-engineered in order to officially enter the market. In two years, Porsche manufactured the first fifty vehicles, which mostly sold in Austria and Germany. As it started to gain recognition among car enthusiasts and, to a lesser degree, the general public, the 356 started to take force. Over seven thousand were produced between 1948 and 1955.
