As the fifties rolled in, the Porsche 356 line started to gain traction in the international car market. What started out as an obscure model for racing aficionados was slowly becoming one of the more easily recognizable European cars available at the time. This was particularly valuable in the midst of an ever-growing American automobile industry. As far as high-priced sports cars went at the time, there has hardly anyone doing it like the Porsche 356 model in terms of looks and performance.

Its popularity in the United States was growing at such a rate that New York-based importer Max Hoffman, the sole supplier of Porsches in the country, tried to sway the company in favor of building a stripped-down roadster version that could potentially appeal to the current roadster craze. It would take a couple more years for this to happen, but the demand was definitely starting to show. There was a desire within Porsche to expand beyond the current model and experiment with the formula that had been going strong for almost five years already.
