As its immediate predecessor marked the beginning of a new generation of Porsche 356 models, the 1961 Porsche 356 wasn’t meant to break any new ground. Instead, this iteration only refined the improvements already made by its 1960 version. It was characterized as the ideal form of the T5 body, which the company had debuted a year prior. The introduction of the new 1.6 L Type 692/3A B4 engine as an option further improved upon the performance of an already solid model.

Beyond the new engine alternative, there wasn’t a lot differentiating the 1961 Porsche 356 from the previous model. No new paint colors were even made available for the new model year and production remained fairly consistent between the two. However, this wouldn’t be the case for much longer. The next version of the Porsche 356 would start to make more visible changes to the model in an effort to slowly give this new generation an identity of its own.
