Fifty units of the Porsche 356 were manufactured during its first two years of production. The model went mostly unnoticed outside the more knowledgeable car enthusiast circles, where it gained prominence following its victory in a 1948 race at Innsbruck. Having won in its class, the car was tweaked and re-engineered with the intention of introducing it to both the racing and the everyday markets. 1950 was the year in which the model finally went into serious production following those two slow years. While only fifty models were made between 1948 and 1949, over 7,500 were produced in the next five years.

This officially marked the beginning of what would go on to become one of the most successful lines in the young company’s history. The 1950 Porche 356 introduced the general European market to the aesthetic and technological innovation that characterized the model from the start. However, the model wasn’t quite ready to take the spotlight, which would happen a year later, once again thanks to a big racing win. Still, it started to earn the attention that designer Ferry Porsche (son of company founder Ferdinando Porsche) had initially hoped for the new model.
