The 1956 Porsche 356 was the first model of the Porsche 356 A generation. It was introduced late in 1955, implementing a variety of small but important changes into the design and mechanics of the vehicle. This first model soon earned the nickname T1 due to its internal factory designation being Type 1. This would be a year of transitioning from the “pre-A” era of the 356 and the formal A generation, meaning some of the more significant changes were yet to be introduced to the model.

The 1956 model year saw the release of the rare T1 European variant, a series of roadsters manufactured after the suggestion of luxury vehicle importer Max Hoffman. Only 156 models of the 1956 Porsche European variant were made, making them highly desired nowadays by collectors and fans alike. This unique contribution by Porche to the rising American roadster culture remains one of their more interesting attempts at adapting to the overseas market while still retaining the class and poise of the Porsche brand.
