Even though the production was supposed to halt in 1964 and Porsche had already introduced its replacement to the market, the C generation of Porsche 356 continued on to 1965 due to unprecedented demand for the vehicle in the American market. 1964 had just been the peak year in sales of the Porsche 356 at 14,151 units sold, which left the model with enough momentum for another successful run the year after. The 1965 Porsche 356 is a testament to the status the model had reached by then.

In many ways, the Porsche 356 left a big impact in automobile culture as a signifier of taste and status. In fact, an interesting fun fact about this particular model is that the last ten models of the 1965 Porsche 356 ever produced were specifically made for the Dutch police in March 1966. These also featured a unique 1.6 L Type 616/26 B4 engine, making them extremely rare custom vehicles.
