Following such a solid year as 1957 in terms of production of the Porsche 356 would be hard. After all, the model had just had its best year until then. With 1,171 units produced in 1957, it was safe to say that the affectionally named Porsche T2 (given its factory designation being Type 2) had a bright future ahead. However, the lack of major new introductions or exciting changes in the 1958 Porsche 356 led to a decline in sales. Not that this wasn’t expected, especially given interest within the company to introduce a new generation in the coming years.

Still, the A generation of the Porsche 356 enjoyed a healthy junior year, particularly thanks to the introduction of the 1.5 L Type 692/0 B4 and 1.5 L Type 692/1 B4 engines, which were exclusives to this production year. The vehicles were popular in both Europe and the United States, where they were a signifier of status and taste between peers.
