Having become synonymous with adventure and freedom, the Chevrolet Corvette has cemented its place in automobile history as America’s sports car. The line has been in production for over sixty years and has spanned seven different design generations. The first generation, the C1, was introduced as a display show car in 1953 at the New York Auto Show, where it generated enough public interest to warrant General Motors to work on a production version.
This generation, the first year of which consisted of three hundred hand-built polo white convertibles, remains the only Corvette generation to feature a solid axle model. The second generation in 1963 was the first one to feature independent suspension. The C2 introduced the Corvette StingRay, which, although smaller, retained the fiberglass body panels. This generation would run from 1963 to 1967.
The subsequent five generations would consistently transform the image of the Corvette line. While the styling would change across the years, the line would always retain its signature elegance and its icon status. The most recent generation, the C7, was first introduced in 2014. It continued the tradition of the line’s front-engine design. This, however, is said to soon change with the introduction of the eighth generation in 2020, which will present the first rear-engined Chevrolet Corvette.
