Halfway through the 1981 production year, manufacturing of the Corvette line was moved from the St. Louis, Missouri General Motors Plant to the one in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This resulted in the 350 CID L-81 base engine being the only one used in the 1981 Corvette. The engine that was previously used exclusively for those models that needed to comply with California emission consideration was made standard for all units.

The 1981 Corvette was the first one in the line to use a fiberglass rear leaf spring, which today is a trademark of the brand name. This spring reduced the weight by thirty-six pounds, limited to base suspensions with automatic transmission. Over ninety percent of the ordered cars would also feature the cast aluminum wheels that had been offered as an option since the 1976 Corvette. Other features that made their debut with these models were a powered adjustable driver’s seat and remote-controlled exterior mirrors.
