‘Butzi’ Porsche ( grandson of Ferdinand Porsche) starts work on the Porsche 911 in 1959. Originally named the 901, this new model is more powerful, stylish and luxurious than its predecessor, the 356. Work continues for the next four years and finally,in 1963, the car is ready for its debut.
Porsche introduces the 911 to the German public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1964 and the car is an immediate success. Inititally, the 911 is only available in Europe but two years later, in 1965, the first 911’s are exported to America. Looking to expand its marketshare, Porsche adds two additional models to the 911 lineup–the 911 T and the 911 S .
Some features of the early 911 models include their signature air-cooled six-cylinder engine and unitary design. Other options include its four speed automatic or manual transmission. Cosmetically, the original 911’s are available in a dizzying array of exterior colors and interior finishes.
