Government regulations combined with an increase in engine size meant the 1972 Porsche 911 was markedly heavier than previous models. Known internally as the E-program, the 1972 911 featured improved brakes and better suspension. The trim was also different from the previous year’s model and was now a gunmetal gray. The 1973 Porsche 911 model was known as the F-program and was slightly different from the 1972 model. One of the differences was the absence of chrome in the sidelights and tail lights of the 1973 911.

Some of the 1973 911s delivered to the U.S. came with bumper guards or spoilers placed at the front with additional, apparent changes to the interior of the car. For all models, the center dash was now black and powered by the Bosch mechanical fuel injection (though this was changed in January of 1973). The T and E came with the standard 4-speed transmission but could also be ordered with the 5-speed transmission. (The 5-speed was standard on the S). Again, the customer had the choice of a 911T, 911E, or the 911 Carrera. The 1972-1973 Porsche 911s are considered to be one of the most desirable 911s; one in great condition would command a premium on today’s market.
