Additional Stats: The Porsche 930 was the fastest production car available in Germany at the time of its introduction.
Ernst Fuhrmann, chairman of Porsche AG between 1972 and 1980, adapted the turbo-technology that was originally developed for the 917/30 CAN-AM car. Then, he applied it to the 3.0 litre flat-six used the Carrera RS 3.0. That way, he created what the company internally dubbed as the Porsche 930. The production version of the car was introduced at the Paris Auto Show in 1974. Then, it was put into production in Europe in 1975 but marketed as the “911 Turbo”. It wasn’t until 1976 that the US market received this model, which was initially labeled as “Turbo Carrera” for a brief time. Eventually, the car received the designation of ‘Type 930’, which continued for the rest of its production.
Compared with the 911, the Type 930 received a suspension revision, larger brakes, larger wheels, wider tires and flared fenders. A large rear spoiler, popularly known as “Whale Tail” or a “Tea Tray” was added to help create downforce at the rear and push more air through the engine. The Porsche 930 also featured a stronger 4-speed gearbox. It was very fast but also very demanding to drive, to the point of even being dangerous for inexperienced drivers.
The Porsche 930 received a major upgrade in 1978, when the engine size was increased to 3.3 liters. An intercooler was added to bump up engine output to 300hp. It also received significant improvements in 1983, 1986 and 1989. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the car was was pulled from the US and Japan in 1980, as a result of changes in emissions regulations. It remained available on the Canadian and European markets until it was officially replaced by the Type 964 in 1990.
