Significant upgrades were made to the first-generation Porsche 930 in 1978, even comfort features. The engine capacity was increased from 3.0L to 3.3L, an air-to-air intercooler was added to the engine to bump up engine output to 300hp from 256hp while still complying with emissions restrictions, and the height of the “Whale Tail” spoiler was increased to make room for the intercooler; the spoiler was now infamously called the “Tea Tray” spoiler.
Additionally, the 1978 Porsche 930’s suspension benefitted from new anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and large diameter rear torsion bars. This 930 model included upgraded brakes similar to those used on the 917 race car and had a rear lid made from sheet steel. The fixed plastic rear wing for mounting the intercooler was also made much bigger. The car was given an exhaust system with twin tailpipe where exhaust gases could only escape through the left pipe when the boost-pressure control valve of the turbocharger was open.
