In 1976, export of the Porsche 930 to the United States began and it was known as the “Turbo Carrera” or “Turbo”. Originally, Porsche’s street cars were previously known more for their handling and driving characteristics rather than their raw power output, but the 911 Turbo changed that. Although very demanding to drive, the car proved to be very fast. It’s top speed was slightly over 155-mph and was one of the fastest automobiles of its day.
The 3.0L engine was chosen for good off-boost performance with the lower compression then deemed necessary with turbocharging. Even in emissions-legal U.S. form, the 930 model had a prodigious 246 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. Like other high-hp cars, the 911 Turbo demanded 100% from its drivers and definitely gained a reputation for it. Nevertheless, the car proved to be a huge success in both the European and North American markets.
