1948 Jaguar XK120
The Jaguar XK120 was produced from 1948 to 1954. Launched at the London Motor Show in 1948, the XK120 was meant to be a prototype showcasing Jaguar’s new XK engine. The Dual Overhead Cam 3.4 L Straight-6 XK Engine was very advanced for its time and had a standard 8:1 compression ratio with 160 bhp. The XK120, a distinctive and stylish car unlike anything seen before, was so well received by the public and motoring enthusiasts, that William Lyons, head of Jaguar, decided to put the car in production right away. The first 242 cars produced were wooden framed, hand-built cars with aluminium panels. The XK120 was available in one body style-an open seater roadster with a canvas top and detachable side screens. The car could also be ordered as either a left hand or right-hand drive. Some of the features of the car include its semi-independent torsion bar front suspension, telescopically adjustable steering column, recirculating ball steering and 12-inch drum brakes.
Demand outpaced supply with the XK120 and so the decision was made to make the switch from handbuilt cars to factory-built. As a result, the first generation XK120’s are especially valuable as so few were built and even less survived the passage of time.
