Named after the French and Italian worlds for the coastal roads that run along the face of a cliff, particularly the Grande Corniche that overlooks Monaco from the French Riviera, the Rolls-Royce Corniche made its debut in 1971. With its release, the Rolls-Royce company fulfilled a twenty-year-old unfinished project. a prototype, which undertook over fifteen thousand miles of endurance testing across Europe, was developed under the name Corniche in 1939. However, said prototype was blown up by an axis bomb while awaiting shipment to England in Normandy. The name was registered, but the onset of World War II prevented further production.

When the model actually came to be, it sported the standard Rolls-Royce V8 engine with aluminum cylinder heads, cast iron wet cylinder liners, and an aluminum-silicon alloy block. Standard three-speed automatic transmission sourced from General Motors was implemented, and a hydraulic self-leveling system augmented the four-wheel independent suspension. Available in both a coupe and a convertible, the Rolls-Royce Corniche represented some of the best the brand had to offer. For years, the name was synonymous with performance, luxury, and style, constantly named one of the best drives in the world.

The Rolls Royce Corniche was manufactured between 1971 and 1995. For 24 years, it was the most celebrated front engine, two door rear wheel drive in the world. Rolls Royce has always been known to make beautiful, well made luxurious cars and the Corniche was no different. The Rolls Royce Corniche 1971 featured a V8 Engine with aluminium cylinder heads, aluminium silicon alloy blocks with cast iron wet cylinder liners, a 3.9 stroke and a 4.1 bore making a complete 6.75 L. Originally twin SU Carburettors were fitted later replaced with single Solex 4A1 four barrel carburetors that remained until 1980, when the Bosch fuel injection was created and became a feature.

In 1986 the Corniche II was introduced and named exclusively for the USA market. It’s additional unique features included Anti-Lock brakes and changes to the interior. In 1988 it received a new pattern around the rear licence plate, new reverse warning-lens type, re-designed instrumentation and newly designed seats.
