In 1951, Mercedes-Benz built the first-ever 300S. This car is the most expensive Mercedes yet and is even more luxurious and exclusive than the ‘ Gullwing’, though nowhere near as famous.  Despite its high price, the car was a success, and Mercedes continued to produce the 300S until 1958. Even today, the Mercedes 300S is a highly collectible classic car for the following reasons:

Hand-Built Perfection

Each and every 300s from 1951 to 1958 was hand-built at the  Sindelfingen factory in Germany by master craftsmen and specially trained workers to ensure the highest quality.

Mercedes spared no expense in bringing this flagship to market, and the results were unmistakable, ensuring a level of fit and finish that mass production could never replicate. Between 1951 and 1958, only 560 units were produced across three distinct body styles:

  • 216 Coupes
  • 203 Cabriolets
  • 141 Roadsters

Bespoke Opulence

Another feature of this special car was the wide range of options available. Customers could specify almost any combination of interior features and custom exterior paint, ensuring that no two cars were alike.

While no two cars were exactly alike, every cabin was a masterclass in luxury, featuring top-grade soft leather seats, rich burr walnut or elm wood trim, and plush seating. To complete the experience, every car came equipped with a set of custom-fitted luggage matched to the interior.

Engineering & Performance

The 300S Mercedes-Benz is a sought-after classic because it offers a rare combination of exceptional looks and performance.  True, it’s not a race car, but it was never meant to be one.

This car is surprisingly fast for its size and weight, reaching a top speed of 109 mph. This performance was no accident, given that the 300S shared its chassis, suspension, and core engine architecture with its racing counterpart, the Gullwing.

A Lasting Legacy.

Ultimately, the 300S was more than just a car; it was a statement of recovery and excellence for Mercedes-Benz in the post-war era. While the Gullwing captured the hearts of racing enthusiasts, the 300S captured the spirit of old-world craftsmanship. Today, these rare vehicles stand as a testament to a time when “luxury” meant that every stitch, every piece of wood, and every roar of the engine was crafted by hand to be the absolute best in the world.
