What was originally conceived as a way to fill a void in the lower-priced luxury car market ended up outselling its contemporary model. The 1968 Porsche 912 continued to make significant numbers as it entered its fourth year of production. The 912 hadn’t changed a lot since its inception beyond a few aesthetic changes meant to grant it with an identity of its own. However, this year saw more radical changes implemented, mostly due to new government regulations in the United States that would significantly affect the American car market.

The 1968 Porsche, unlike its predecessors, was subjected to new regulations imparted by the United States Department of Transportation. This included removing the glass lenses enclosing the headlights and replacing them with chrome bezels that directly housed the lenses, painting the windshield wipers black instead of silver, and increasing the strength of windshields by making them out of composite glass. Environmental regulations were also enforced by the Department of Transportation, resulting in the introduction of a vacuum advance distributor and an air pump that lowered emissions by pushing more air through the tailpipe.
