“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” was the approach Porsche followed as they entered the second model year of their Porsche 912 line. The model, which was outselling the concurrent Porsche 911, proved to be a big success among old and new Porsche owners. This meant that the 1966 Porsche 912 remained mostly the same when compared to its predecessor. However, this would prove to be a prudent choice, for the model continued to sell well and enjoyed a positive reception among brand enthusiasts. Some minor changes that were implemented do set it apart from its 1965 iteration.

Aesthetic changes including internal color changes meant to modernize the look of the model were implemented instead. This included painting the dashboard black (adding a decorative band of brushed aluminum) and the sun visors going from all-white to black on one side and white on the other. A few minor vestiges reminiscent of the Porsche 356 disappeared during the production of the 1966 Porsche 912, such as the gas tank release pool and the fluted shift knob (reshaped for this model into a round ball).
