For the model year 1967, Porsche introduced a 911 Targa and an S model to the lineup. The S model was the “top of the line” 911 while the Targa was the mid-range version. The Targa sported a folding roof and a plastic zippered window that covered the rear of the car. It was not a true convertible, but it came equipped with a protective “rollover bar” as the first-ever car to have this feature.
Porsche also introduced other significant improvements to the 911, which included new reclining Recaro sports seats. These could be ordered in vinyl leatherette or leather. The 4-speed automatic transmission was also introduced for the model year 1967. This year also included alloy wheels in a distinctive 5-leaf design.
