The Porsche 911 was built around the rear engine at a time in which this feature was very unpopular with almost all car manufacturers. Despite this, the executives at Porsche proceeded with the rear engine. The rationale behind this was that this was the only way to create a great sports car that was also functional, comfortable, and contained enough room for ample luggage space. This gamble paid off when the public embraced the 911. It was fast, sporty, and, like its predecessors, it came equipped with lots of chrome and an outstanding 5-speed manual transmission.
In 1966, a new 911 was also introduced, the 911S, which saw a power bump from 130 bhp to 160bhp. In order to do this, the chassis and brakes were improved, and lightweight Fuchs wheels were added. However, the rear engine characteristic of the earlier 911 did remain.
