It was at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show that Bentley Motors introduced the beginning of their new line, the Bentley Azure, with the first generation of the vehicle: the Mark I. The new model was based on the Bentley Continental R’s platform, which was first launched in 1991. Italian car design firm Pininfarina assisted Bentley in turning the Continental R, a small convertible model, into the full-size four-seater convertible that would come to be the Bentley Azure Mark I. The new model sported a bulky, sizable build, which was designed to provide comfortable seating for four passengers and to give off a sense of presence.
Only nine units were produced in the first year, with another 248 produced for the second. Because of limitations in space and low workforce numbers, the process consisted of first building the shell and soft-top in the Pininfarina factory in Italy with parts mostly sourced from England. Then, the final assembly of the model would take place at the Bentley plant in Crewe. This process made the vehicle production more expensive than it should.
