The 1957 Buick Roadmaster, which marked the first of two years of the line’s shortlived seventh generation, was designed to make an impact on the increasingly stale automobile landscape. The economic recession of 1956 was hurting car manufacturers beyond General Motors, which resulted in the lowest sales years for the Buick Roadmaster line until then (33,000 in 1957 and 14,000 in 1958). The abysmal sales numbers are made all the more unfortunate when considering the fact that the vehicles were some of the best made by General Motors at the time, 1958 being their fiftieth year of production.
The 1957 and 1958 Buick Roadmasters featured an even wider panoramic windshield held up by stylish reverse slanted pillars, a red-filled Sweepspear lining the sides of the body, and a chromed rear fender between the wheelhouse and the end of the bumper. Additionally, this production year debuted the 364 cubic inch engine in the line, which brought horsepower up to 300. The brakes, which had cast-iron liners in aluminum drums, were considered the best in the industry at the time.
