Internally known as the Porsche 993, the 1996 Porsche 911 featured a variety of improvements and modifications that elevated it well over the previous entries in the Porsche 911. Described by Porsche themselves as “a significant advance, not just from a technical, but also a visual perspective,” it featured a new six-speed transmission and a completely new engine design. These new enhancements resulted in a 15% increase in power over the previous model. It also sported an optional all-wheel-drive system that departed from previous cars’ three-differential setups. Larger brakes with drilled discs, a dual-flow exhaust system, and revised power steering were also among the improvements enacted.
The 1996 model year also saw the introduction of the Targa model variant. This new iteration featured a retractable glass roof design known as the greenhouse system. This roof would retract underneath the rear window, leaving behind a large opening. This eliminated the problem that plagued previous versions of the Targa variation, which inconveniently stored the top in a wide B-pillar that functioned as a roll bar.
