In 1968 the existing 911 models showcase minor upgrades such as brushed aluminium, (which replaced the interior wood trim) and door handles with recessed buttons. In addition to the existing models, an exciting development for Porsche comes in the form of the 911E, a brand new ‘midrange’ Porsche. This model is sandwiched between the 911 T( which it replaced) and the 911S. It’s considered ‘midrange’ because it has more features than the ‘basic’ 911 but is less luxurious than the 911s.
While customers in Europe had their pick of 911’s, buyers in the United States had fewer options. Namely the 911 L and the base 911 to be exact. The top of the line S and the 911E was not available due to failure to pass new federal emission laws. Porsche solved this problem by building the 911L (L for lux/luxury). This car was essentially the S minus the high-powered engine as the two cars shared the same suspension, brakes, and trim.
Created solely for the American market, the 911L is a rare and desirable car with 449 models built.
