The 280 SL was the most popular and most widely available Pagoda with sales in excess of 23,000. Most of these SL’s were exported to America. Like its predecessors, the 280 SL was built for comfort and luxury with a sporty look exterior and plush interior with bucket seats. Unlike its predecessors, the 280 SL came with a bigger 2778cc engine which allowed for even better performance and handling. The car also sported disc brakes on all wheels, an option which was rare for cars of that era.
The SL’s destined for America were different in some important ways from the cars available to the rest of the world. In order to comply with safety standards, the 280 SL’s exported to America had distinctive ‘sealed beam’ headlights in contrast to the Bosch Lichteinheit headlights available to the rest of the world. The 4 spd manual with no AC was preferred in Europe while Americans favored the 4 spd automatic with air conditioning. The rare ZF 5 spd manual was also offered as an option.
