First displayed at the 1954 New York Auto Show the 190SL was a great looking car. It’s beautiful design and stylish presence was reminiscent of its predecessor the 300 SL but the car was a bit of a disappointment as it was similar to the 300 SL in looks only.
The 190 SL however , was never meant to replace the 300SL but instead was built as an affordable alternative for the customer who wanted the look of the 300SL without the price tag.
The 1955 Mercedes 190SL was available as a hardtop, a soft top convertible/roadster or with the optional removable hardtop. Early 190 SL’s ( those models built before 1959) came equipped with a small rear window, leather bucket seats and aluminium doors.
Rust is the main enemy of those cars and so anyone in the market for a190SL should have the car inspected for rust. Highly desirable in today’s classic car market, an early model, the1955 190SL commands high prices.
