The XJS Series II was built for ten years from 1981-1991. There were new and improved features for this second-generation model including a new V12 engine which made its debut in 1981.  This new engine was further upgraded in 1983 and was known as the 3.6L V12. In other exciting news, Jaguar introduced a Targa option to the XJS and so now, customers could choose from the original coupe body style or the Targa top.  Two transmission options were available for the XJS Series II- the 5 spd manual or 4 spd automatic. However, for customers choosing the 3.6L V12 engine, only the  5 spd manual transmission was available.

In 1985  a V12 Targa,  also known as the XJ-SC was introduced but the model was unpopular and so discontinued.  For model year 1988, Jaguar finally introduced a convertible model to join the existing coupe and Targa line-up.
