In 1998, Volkswagen bought out Bentley from Vickers. The Bentley Azure had been in production for three years and the new directives decided to keep the line going for another five years, intending to introduce a successor later on. In 2006, production started on such a follow-up, which would be based on the Bentley Arnage platform instead of the Bentley Continental R. This was the birth of the Bentley Azure’s Generation, the Bentley Azure Mark II, a two-door 2+2 convertible grand tourer.
For vehicles of their size and their weight, the vehicles in the Bentley Azure Second Generation were particularly fast. Bentley claimed an acceleration time for the vehicle of 5.6 seconds for zero to 97 kilometers per hour (60.27 miles per hour), with a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour (168 miles per hour). As fast as the car was, at nine miles per hour, the United States Department of Energy listed the Bentley Azure Mark II as their least fuel-efficient car for a vehicle in its size. The model is, however, most remembered for its position in the middle of the conflict between BMW and the Volkswagen Group over the use of the engines previously used by Bentley before the purchase.
