Oldsmobile 442

The Oldsmobile 442 was first introduced in 1964 as an option package for GM’s Cutlass models at the time. It soon became its own model in 1968, running all the way through the sixties and seventies. The name 442 derived from the car’s four barrel carburetor, its four speed manual transmission, and its dual exhausts. Somewhat ironically, in 1965 the model was switched into a three speed manual transmission, but the name remained the same.

The new model was born out of the competition between two General Motors divisions, Pontiac and Oldsmobile, after the Pontiac LeMans (at the intermediate commercial level) found unexpected success in the early sixties. As the other brand struggled to hold up against Pontiac, the 442 was conceived as an intermediate option for Oldsmobile. It debuted in late 1963 as an option package available as a two door coupe, two door convertible, and two and four door sedans. This launched the first generation of the Oldsmobile 442.

The model would go on for six generations, produced almost consistently from 1964 to 1991. Throughout its many iterations, the 442’s design choices were varied, with bold changes and distinctive stylizing taking place in between generations. Looks swung across an aesthetic pendulum throughout the whole run, ranging from retro to modern, from smooth to boxy, and from elegant to every day. This made the 442 an outstanding addition to the Oldsmobile marque.
