Cadillac Eldorado- A Short History
Cadillac’s Eldorado created a sensation when it debuted in 1953 and it’s easy to see why. Simply put, the car is a showstopper. It is a dazzlingly attractive car that manages to look both sporty and elegant. This is no small feat for a car of this size. The Eldorado’s stylish exterior, wraparound windshield, and convertible top are memorable and striking, even today. Designed for looks and comfort, the car is equipped with just about every option available in 1953. Both under the hood and in its exterior styling, the car signals craftsmanship and innovation.
Innovation and craftsmanship, however, do not come cheap and the Eldorado is the most expensive Cadillac ever built. It’s also one of the most expensive cars across all brands built for model year 1953. Because the Cadillac Eldorado is a labor of love and not profit, only 532 models of the limited edition convertible are built. This low production number results in a financial loss . Why did General Motors take a chance on the car? Because they can.
In the 1950’s Cadillac is an established leader in the luxury car market with record sales. This influx of cash means that GM can afford to build a low-production expensive car like the Cadillac Eldorado. The hope is that the car will continue to promote Cadillac’s brand as an innovator in the auto industry. The gamble pays off and the 1953 Eldorado becomes an instant classic. A highly desirable car, driven by politicians and celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and American President Dwight Eisenhower to name a few.
CADILLAC ELDORADO – FUTURE GENERATIONS
Though not affordable, the warm reception by the public ensures that Cadillac continues to dominate car sales in the 1950’s and 60’s.
Other car makers rush in to produce their own versions of the Eldorado but none can replicate the car.
The Cadillac Eldorado goes on to become one of the most successful lines, built to 2002.
Notable Editions of the Eldorado include the original 1953 model, the Eldorado Seville, the 1957/58 Eldorado Broughham, and the Biarritz Convertible.
