The 911E was a brand new model for the year 1968. Considered to be one of the early Porsches, prices for a 1968 model are within the six-figure range since it’s such a desirable collector car. There were many models available for purchase including the base 911, the 911L, the 911T, and the 911S. In the United States, however, the only models available were the 911 and the 911L, as these were the ones compliant with American regulations at the time.
Created solely for the American market, the 911L was only produced in 1968, making it a rare and desirable 911. In fact, only 449 cars were built. The top of the line S was not available due to its failure to pass new Federal emission laws, so Porsche built the 911L (L for lux/luxury), which was essentially the S minus the high-powered engine. The two cars shared the same suspension, brakes, and trim. Minor upgrades for the year 1968 included brushed aluminum, which replaced the interior wood trim and door handles with recessed buttons.
