The 911 debuted in Frankfurt, Germany in 1963, but work on the car actually started in 1959. Originally, the car was designated the 901 but Peugeot objected, claiming the 901 was too similar to one of their cars, hence the 911 was born.
Though a great success with the public from the beginning, the early 911s did not escape criticism, especially with industry insiders. This was largely due to the tendency of the car to oversteer and to become unstable at high speeds. Porsche handled the criticism well, and by 1969, there were marked improvements in the steering and handling of the car. Despite these flaws, the early 911s are still highly desirable collectors cars that are able to fetch a premium in today’s market.
